A very fine antique Victorian Coromandel writing Slope made by the world famous London box makers Betjemann & Sons, circa 1870 in date.
This wonderful antique writing slope is in beautiful coromandel wood with large gothic style pierced mounts. The fall-front opening to an inset black gold tooled leather-lined slope and beautiful tiger-satinwood lined fitted interior. A brass button stamped with Patented/Betjemann dislodges the secret internal compartment when pushed.
There is no mistaking its unique quality and design, which is sure to make it a treasured piece by any discerning collector.
Coromandel, also known as Calamander wood, is a higly prized and valuable exotic wood from India and Sri Lanka and was only used in top quality pieces.
Complete with working Bramah lock and key, the lock is stamped Betjemann.
It bears both the maker's and the retailer's plaques:
