Just for some personal input on knives as a character, he doesn't truly care about vash anymore. Alot of this was just some sick way of tormenting Vash. This entire time he just wanted to use him to get what he wants. In season 2 (Lowkey hope it has 25/26 episodes, that'd slap.) Knives will probably return after a long time of healing. Man, It's gonna be great.
