How to use the iPhone panoramic mode to take amazing panoramic photos. On the App Store, there are a few panoramic apps available, but the native iPhone in-camera app does a great job of creating panoramas. These are perfect for being able to get wider shots and ultra-wide panoramic views. You can do both horizontal, as well as vertical shots. Panoramic shots don’t have to be full wide 180 degree pans, they can also be used for short bursts, where you find that you can't go back far enough to get a normal photo.

When shooting a wide pan, it’s always a good idea to do a test run before recording. Why there are three main reasons. It's quite deceptive on what you may think you will get in and then miss when panning, such as tops of trees or something important nearer the ground. Secondly, you need to find where the exposure differs on your pan and finally also know where you want to start and stop your pan.

When you are ready to test run your pan, simply choose which side you would like to pan from, if the arrow is on the opposite side simply tap the white arrow on the opposite frame to flip the start point, this is the same with verticals.

It’s vital to set the exposure correctly in your test run, otherwise, you will get some parts of the scene with various exposures. This typically shows as a graduated blend of digital exposure blur across the pan which looks weird. It’s usually best to look for an area of the scene with medium brightness and contrast. When you have found the area that has the medium brightness and contrast, stop here, press and hold the screen for the AE/AF lock to lock the exposure. Unfortunately in this pan mode, you can’t adjust the exposure with the slider, just lock the exposure, hence why you need a medium brightness and contrast. So during your test run make sure you have a good stance, and that your pan movement is steady and smooth.

To start the pan, simply press the shutter once and glide across the frame in a smooth and steady motion. It's key that you keep the white arrow traveling across the white line, try not to travel off this. If you do you will get a message to move up or down. Also, pan at a relatively slow speed, if you are panning too fast, you will also get a message to slow down. When you have finished your pan, to stop recording you can press the shutter button again or the preferred way is to reverse the pan back in the direction you traveled which will stop the recording.

Just a note that from the iPhone 7 Plus excluding the 8, all the iPhones with multiple lenses including the iPhone 11 Pro with the ultra-wide zoom can be used for pans.

Things to remember:
One downside is that these pan photos do struggle in low light depending on your camera.
When you are close to horizontals or tall subjects, you may get weird distortions.
Keep away from shooting movement in your scene with people, as they can have some weird but sometimes funny results.
When you view your panoramas in the album, only the very wide ones only appear and the rest are in the standard album.
