In the 試し斬り Tameshigiri cutting training with katana, it is most common today to cut the surfaces of tatami mats called ござ Goza. These rolled up mats are soaked in water for a few days to make them easier to cut.
But why do we cut tatami mats in the first place?
The term 試し斬り Tameshigiri literally means “test cutting” and it was originally an act of checking the sharpness of the katana.
In the past when samurai still existed, Tameshigiri was actually performed on the dead bodies of criminals. By this, a katana was graded by how many bodies it could cut through with one swing. By the way, the sharpest tested katana is believed to have cut through 7 bodies at once.
However as time passed by, they started to cut bundled straw (straw post) and bamboo more often, which was cut by street performers with katana.
However, straw posts and bamboo were both a little inconvenient. Straw posts tend to scatter and make a mess after cutting, and bamboo is very firm so that a beginner can easily damage the katana.
Cutting rolled up and soaked tatami mat surfaces was invented to make up for the shortcomings of the two. This was especially possible thanks to the production of tatami mats becoming abundant in the modern era, which used to be a very expensive kind of flooring.
By the way, we still cut straw posts and bamboo sometimes too for different purposes of training.
