Homestead Acts (Homestead Act of 1862 and Homestead Act of 1866):
In this video, host Ashley Garner and co-host Kayleen Carter discuss the Homestead Acts. These important pieces of legislation were the earliest attempts by the United States gov’t to house American citizens by providing them with 160 acres of free land. While the Homesteading Act of 1865 was mostly tailored to the Western States, the Homestead Act of 1866 focused primarily on the southern states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi. Ashley covers the challenges former slaves encountered in pursuing land ownership through these acts.
