Indonesia is presently one of the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases in the world. One of the major reasons is the disproportionate development of its cities.
The significant rural exodus observed over the last decades, the unprecedented economic and demographic growth, coupled with a lack of urban planning, have led to an urban sprawl that seems to have no limit, and contributes every day a bit more to the greenhouse gas emissions and the destruction of the environment.
A French-Indonesian cooperation agreement on urban development allows to undertake different initiatives for the city of tomorrow. The international competition gathered more than sixty French and Indonesian urban planners and architects. The teams worked on a dozen of redevelopment projects in close collaboration with the residents and the local communities to propose local solutions.
