It is not onion this time, but tomato that is bringing tears to the eyes of an average household. Tomato inflation is touching new heights as retail prices of tomatoes have shot up to over ₹80/kg last week and is expected to cross the ₹100/kg mark soon in major cities of India. Tomatoes, onions and potatoes (TOP) form the sacred triune of Indian cooking. Soaring prices of any one of these three crops has the potential to mess up the maths of the government’s political calculus. Our research in this field reveals that tomatoes follow a typical price-production cobweb. In this context, it may be worth noting that tomato inflation in retail prices spiked to a y-o-y high of 135.6% in May 2022 and then again to 158.6% in June 2022. In July 2022, tomatoes constituted the highest contribution to CPI inflation basket of 299 commodities. Since November 2022, prices started going down and retail prices of tomatoes in major urban centres hovered around ₹20-25/kg. In these months of negative inflation tomato wholesale prices reached as low as ₹1-2/kg.
