This is our two speed Milemarker typeR on our winch challenge truck, fitted with Goodwinch Sliding Hawse. The high gear connects the hydraulic motor directly to the drum, giving fast rope in, or rope out speed. Gear changes are by the driver, via cables. Because the hydraulic pump is driven directly by the crank shaft, engine speed controls winch drum speed.
The low speed setting is the main winching gear, and is fairly quick for a challenge winch. Its main advantage over DC electric winches, is that winch speed does not fall off with line pull. Infact, there is little warning of aproaching maximum winch torque until the pressure relief valve lifts. For this reason the winch feed line is tapped with a pressure gauge.
Many teams use an electric solenoid valve, but we use a two spool hand valve. So far we havn't needed an oil cooler.
Rear winch is a 12,000lb Goldfish winch from Goodwinch.
