The unusual thing about the abandoned Mount Etna Mine is its maze-like layout. This is one of those abandoned mines that resembles Swiss cheese inside because of all the crazily inter-connected stopes and shafts that go off in different directions. It definitely feels like one is wandering around in an underground labyrinth. Silver, manganese, and lead were mined here back in the 1920s along with some smaller amounts of gold, copper, antimony, and zinc.
Here in Part 1, I explored a good portion of the Mount Etna Mine. After climbing up through some stopes, I found an inclined shaft and descended to some lower areas. Further in, I found one of the vertical shafts coming down from above. I believe old mining reports said this vertical shaft was 600 feet deep (183 meters). I also believe there are one or two more vertical shafts on the property that also penetrate the Mount Etna Mine workings.
