In the early 1990s, a small group of young American tennis players would make the break-through at the ATP grand slam level events.
Michael Chang was the first player from this group to win a major title. When he captured the 1989 French Open title when he was just 17 years old.
The following year would see a continuation of this trend. When Pete Sampras went onto win his first of 14 major titles at the 1990 US Open.
The Americans would be guaranteed yet another grand slam champion when Andre Agassi and Jim Courier would meet in the finals of the 1991 French Open.
The two had been roommates and rivals at the Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
Seeing great potential in Andre Agassi, Nick Bollettieri opted to become his full-time coach.
Courier decided to leave the Bollettieri Academy shortly thereafter and brought Jose Higueras in to be his full time tennis coach.
Despite the fact that Agassi had already been to multiple grand slam finals. He would find this encounter against Courier to be anything but an easy victory.
