In this week’s video “Guilt and the grief experience” I discuss the impact of guilt after losing a loved one. Through guilt, we try to make sense of the death. We focus on all the would haves and should haves and almost punish ourselves for our imperfections.
We create this idea in our minds that burdens us with some level of responsibility for the loss. In essence, we come to believe that if our actions would have been different, that perhaps the outcome would have been different and our loved one would be here.
Guilt can torment and punish you. It’s okay to feel sad, hurt, and destroyed by loss. I am here to tell you that you did enough. Your loved one knew how much you loved them. And it is not your fault that they are not here.
