Why did silent films have music? How do orchestras and conductors perform to silent films?
Ben Winters, senior lecturer in music at the Open University, explains.
In 1925 Richard Strauss's great comic opera and pop cultural sensation Der Rosenkavalier was made into a silent film, with a specially created score from the composer himself.
Enjoy a screening of the restored silent film, while Geoffrey Paterson conducts the chamber orchestra – just as Strauss himself did at the film’s London premiere in 1926.
