Some nice simple exercises I find useful for building up the bass drum speed and coordination for the Grade 3 and 4 level - especially quick 16th doubles.
Get lots of messages about how to play this or that groove from a Grade piece or song, usually involving playing a quick double on the kick, at around the grade 3 or 4 level. I feel the best way to go about it is to do a bit of groundwork with these basic exercises. Then with a bit of speed and coodination in place, those sort of patterns should come a bit easier.
I use heel-up technique on the kick pedal but these exercise would work equally well with heel-down.
Have fun and please let me know if any questions :)
