Since covid-19, many restaurants said goodbye to physical menus and instead started to put QR code stickers on tables. Customers point their phones and scan these QR codes to access the menu.
The thing is, cyber criminals also go out to eat and they can easily place their own sticker over the legitimate sticker.
So, next time anyone scans that QR code, they will be redirected to a bad link like a malware or phishing site. Restaurants are just one example, but this is applicable to QR codes anywhere.
Now, QR codes are sneaky. You don't get to see the URL before you scan it and they can be used to prepare a malicious text message, connect you to a fake Wi-Fi network, and more.
So, even though they are very convenient, try to avoid using them and instead ask for the official URL. And, go there by typing it. If you do end up scanning a QR code, double and triple check that you are on the correct website and if you are prompted to do anything, don't.
