Beach-Head II by Roger & Bruce Carver, published by Access Software (US), U.S.Gold (EU) and released in 1985.
"Victory at hand -The Fortress destroyed, the enemy on the run. Then, a brilliant suicide air attack leaves the Allied fleet in a heap of mangled metal at the bottom of the Harbor. No longer do you hold the advantage. All that's left of your forces is a squadron of helicopters and several platoons of battle weary infantry. From the mountains nearby, the Dictator, known only as The Dragon, is watching and waiting to attack.
Feeling the moment is right, he issues the following demand, "Your forces are surrounded and your position is futile. Surrender now or the prisoners will suffer for your stubbornness." The odds are totally against you, but your decision is immediate. Allied forces are poised to proceed inland to rescue their comrades and capture The Dragon once and for all. But whose final battle will it be? His - or yours?"
The sequel to the acclaimed Beach-Head. While not as well remembered as the original it is still a fun game even more so in two player mode. This game offered true Head-to-Head as one player takes control of the dictator and one the Allies. It was a great two player game but I am long playing it in single player at level 3 as the Allies. The computerised voices really add something to this game making it quite special in 1985. The allied Chief Commander looks and sounds a lot like the Impossible Mission guy.
In the opening attack scene, you start by landing your soldiers behind the walls. Then you need to get those soldiers down to the bottom of the screen. The more the better. Note you are always being shot at and on level 3, the gun moves fast. You can throw grenades at the gun to earn high points. In the next scene, you are helping the hostages escape by taking control of the gun and shooting at everything the enemy has as they attempt to kill the escaping hostages in various ways. This level can take some time to get through and is the lowest point of the game for me.
The third scene involves you loading the hostages onto the chopper and getting them out. You get two lives. If the second is destroyed you lose those hostages. You can choose how many hostages you take on each run. It's a very short level and I would have liked a bit more to it.
The fourth and final stage is the Chief Commander vs The Dragon in a knife throwing contest. There are nine rounds and in each you need to be the first to land 4 hits on the enemy. Should you have the most points after totalling up all the game sections, you win the day! The game doesn't really have a satisfying ending though. It's all about the score!
