Rambles with Robin and Ruby - June 11, 2019: 19E17
Title: Yukon: Dawson City to Tombstone Territorial Park: Rambles With Robin and Ruby, 19E17.
Robin is a 2015 T@B travel trailer. Ruby is a 2019 Subaru Outback.
In this video, we drive from Dawson City to Tombstone Territorial Park, Yukon. The Dempster Highway is not exactly a highway. It is more like a gravel ribbon that tracks across the northern part of the Boreal forest and then across the tundra.
In my view, the Dempster Highway is Canada’s epic road. It is the ONLY road in North America that provides unfettered access across the tundra to the Arctic Ocean.
While in Tombstone Territorial Park, we made our first alpine hike of 2019 on Goldensides.
Geological and other natural curiosities mentioned include: a) Tintina Trench fault; b) sand and gravel deposited during the last ice age; c) a stabilized rock glacier; d) the unglaciated land of Beringia and the extinct megafauna; e) Siberian anemone (Anemonastrum sibiricum); f) Moss Campion (Silene acaulis); g) Arctic Willow (Salix arctica); h) Cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus); i) Nagoonberry (Rubus arcticus ssp. acaulis); j) Eight-petal Mountain-Avens (Dryas octopetala alaskensis); k) Pallas' Wallflower (Erysimum pallasii); l) Arctic Lupine (Lupinus arcticus); and m) Lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea).
Also mentioned are the following communities and geographic sites: a) Dawson City, Yukon; b) Dempster Highway #5; c) Tombstone Territorial Park; d) Goldensides alpine hike; and e) Tombstone Mountain.
