Dead-stop training is a great protocol to boost functional strength & power. That’s because the individual must overcome inertia to move the weight from dead stop position. This requires lifter to recruit high threshold motor units (fast twitch fibers) that are responsible for high power & torque activities similar to explosive movements. It also demands individual to turn on all available motor units at once & at a higher frequency in order to overcome dead stop position.
Simply the lifter must fire up all of their working muscles from 0-100 rapidly to overcome that dead stop position & aggressively blast through inertia in 1-2 sec. As a result dead stop training, particularly when applied with compensatory acceleration (attempting to lift weight as explosively as possible) is excellent for strength as well as athletic performance, speed, & power.
Furthermore, staying tight in the bottom or stretched position (roughly 90 deg) of a compound movement is critical for maximizing technique, safety, & force. The dead stop method allows the lifter to find their ideal starting position as they can rest the load on pins before driving it up.
Side note, these involve very little proprioception because bottom stretch is deloaded therefore your muscles spindles provide very little feedback. Therefore they should be used in addition to traditional 90 Deg Eccentric Isometrics, not in place of.
