This is a vintage two thread serger (overlocker) made in Japan, by Brother Industries Ltd. It's really heavy for it's size, a hefty 10kg! I believe this to be made around the 80's or earlier, as the 90's home sergers were already quite advanced during that time.
When I got the machine, it was working but was rather loud and the cutting was bad. I could not find a manual anywhere, or online. However, since all sergers were basically the same mechanically, and being only two thread, it was easy for me to figure it out. So I opened it up (very easy to do, just the front cover), and discovered that it was really dry. The top of the internal machine has a thick circular felt that acts as an oil dam (or whatever you want to call it). Attached to the felt are various strings that connects to the various moving parts. Since the felt was dry, so were the other parts of the mechanism. After cleaning and oiling, it worked very smoothly, except for the cutting, which wasn't very good. So I got some sand papers and sharpened the upper knife as best as I could, because I could not remove the knives due to stubborn stuck screws that refused to budge no matter how I tried. I'm also not sure if they can be replaced or whether parts are still available. It's good now. It's smooth and fast. It sounds a little loud in the video (no thanks to my low grade mobile video cam), but in person, it's not....and it won't wake the neighbors or the kids in the next room in the middle of the night.
