(15 May 2019) Paris is wishing the Eiffel Tower a happy birthday and will offer an elaborate laser show retracing the monument's 130-year history.
Beginning Wednesday, the tower will broadcast 12-minute laser light shows across the facade until Friday that will be visible from nearby neighbourhoods.
The monument, nicknamed Iron Lady, is also undergoing renovation work ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Eiffel Tower Director-General Patrick Branco Ruivo said that the iron structure will be repainted for the 20th time in its history, and an elevator will be replaced.
Some six million people go up the 300 metre (approx. 984 feet) tower every year, in addition to crowds of tourists who arrive to have a look at Gustave Eiffel's creation from the ground.
Designed for the 1889 World Fair, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest monument at the time of its creation, and thanks to strict urban planning rules, it still looms large above the Paris skyline.
Many view it as one of the most iconic monuments in Europe.
"It's just magnificent. It's a work of mastery of engineering and art," said Jane Trout, a tourist from Oklahoma.
