May 19, 2011, Patagonia Headquarters. In Chile and other Spanish-speaking countries they call it a cacerolazo -- a stew-pot protest.
Last week, the Chilean government approved the application of a multinational energy company to construct five huge dams in the area of southern Chile that inspired Yvon Chouinard to name our company Patagonia. The latest poll shows that 74% of the Chilean population is opposed to these dams. For the next several days, tens of thousands of these citizens will be protesting the dams, and we wanted to join them in solidarity. On May 19, 2011, the Patagonia community gathered at our Ventura headquarters and staged a caceroloza, a protest technique used in Chile and other Spanish-speaking countries where citizens bang pots and pans in loud opposition.
