My minor recital is a video portfolio of various performance works. Each piece was recorded and filmed separately. The main idea behind this collection of works is that of rhythm changes and techniques. The word "labyrinth", and title of this recital, is defined as "a complicated irregular network of passages or paths in which it is difficult to find one's way". The exploration of rhythmic techniques and pattern changes is encapsulated in this title. Particular emphasis is drawn to the adaptation and transferral of rhythmic ideas onto the instruments that I play.
This duet was a collaborated composition between myself and Lilavan Gangen. For this piece, we used folk-style, groove-based tabla concepts. The first concept is that of the dadra; a 6 beat cycle. This is then followed by the kherwa; an 8 beat cycle, which is then adapted for the faster goema style (a
characteristic groove from Cape Town). The khwera concept is coupled on the djembe with variations of the African-rooted calypso groove. The use of call and response, common in both Indian and African drumming musics, is a predominant feature of this piece. The first section (dadra) makes use of a technique in which we trade turns in playing fills. The khwera section uses 3 pre-determined fills with the last one being repeated 3 times so as to end on beat 1. After the goema section, the two drums exchange one bar at a time as a introduction to the next section. This section follows a format commonly used in tabla music, where the two drummers trade turns playing 8-bars, then 4-bars, then 2 bars, then 1-bar and then 2-beats each. The final section of this duet is a fast khwera and calypso groove, which fades out slowly in dynamic.
