STORYLINE:
U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney arrived in Cairo on Sunday and later met with the Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak.
Cheney is touring Saudi Arabia and the smaller Gulf states in an attempt to win wider support for ethnic reconciliation in Iraq and to counter efforts by Iran to spread its influence in the region.
Cheney is currently trying to reach out to moderate Arab leaders for help in bringing stability to Iraq, a mission that will include pleas for postwar support for minority party Sunnis.
Earlier he travelled to Saudi Arabia and Jordan.
Cheney worked to overcome Saudi skepticism over the U.S. military strategy to secure Baghdad and the leadership capabilities of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
Cheney's visit to the Middle East follows that of U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who participated in an international conference on Iraq in Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt earlier in the month.
