Fugue in D major (BWV 532) by Johann Sebastian Bach performed by Ben Bloor on the 42 stop Metzler organ of Trinity College Cambridge. Recorded on Sunday 22nd December 2019.
The Prelude and Fugue in D major (BWV 532) was written in Bach's Weimar period around 1710, with the fugue being based on an earlier version scripted two years previously. The scherzo-like fugue subject is constructed of a conjunct 4-note ostinato, a pregnant pause and then a lively descending sequence, and surely ranks as one of Bach's strangest subjects. The work ends with a pedal solo that spans the full length of the pedalboard, and shows that Bach was not afraid to demonstrate his virtuosity!
