Hong Kong’s men and women enjoy the longest life expectancy in the world, but 93-year-old Sum Shuet feels longevity is a curse.
Instead of being taking care of, Sum is the caretaker of her 68-year-old son, who suffered a stroke. Sum, who is a diabetic, pays daily visit to the care centre to tend to her son.
The lack of community-based services has resulted in a growing trend of elderly people taking care of their older family members.
In 2014, the government tasked the Elderly Commission with formulating an Elderly Services Programme Plan aimed at achieving “ageing in place”, or moving towards community-based support services as opposed to care homes.
