In this video I will demonstrate my process for preparing, performing, and observing the extended column test, ECT. The extended column test is a standardized test used as an attempt to initiate a fracture and cause propagation across the snowpack. It requires experience to interpret the results and compliments other tests. The E.C.T. SHOULD NOT BE used as a "ride" or "don't ride" decision making tool. This observation should be used in conjunction with recent snowpack, weather, and avalanche observations to create a mosaic of data points to confirm your local avalanche bulletin.
Your personal experience, emotions, and group dynamic may play a bigger influence than any technical data point you gather.
Seek qualified in person instruction, spend time practicing skills in low consequence terrain, and take your time gaining experience in the unforgiving mountain environment.
