The Balinese Gamelan Ensemble has been at Grebel for nearly 10 years, led by I Dewa Made Suparta. This term they will present some traditional pieces as well as an interesting collaborative composition. You will be astounded by the patterns and rhythms.
Programme:
Siwa Nata (God of Art) I Wayan Sinti
A composition of serene beauty by renowned musician, composer, and educator I Wayan Sinti, Siwa Nata is inspired by the repertoire of gamelan semar pegulingan, which is an ancient Balinese court orchestra. It is often performed at the opening of ceremonies and celebrations.
Sekar Atangi Dewa Suparta
Sekar and atangi respectively signify flower and the act of waking up. Sekar atangi celebrates a renewal and hopeful return to normal as we near the end of the pandemic. It explores the variety of emotions that arise when enduring uncertainty.
Slendro Traditional
Slendro refers to one of two tuning systems found in gamelan music. Gamelan gender wayang instruments are tuned to slendro and played using two mallets. Melodies played by the left-hand represent the theme, which are ornamented with interlocking patterns (kotekan) played by the right hand.
Sekar Gendot Traditional
Sekar literally means flower and term gendot signifies abundance and mass. Sekar gendot refers to the beauty of a flower core (sari) which can only be admired when viewed from below a drooping flower head.
Sekar Gadung Traditional
Sekar gadung (lit., colourful flower) is an arrangement of an older genre of gamelan called gamelan selonding. In this piece, the characteristic long melodic lines and mellow interlocking patterns are played on a seven-tone gamelan semaradhana.
Paruman
Paruman is a collaborative composition by the Grebel Community Gamelan Members of Winter 2021 (Andrew Beltaos, Deborah Wills, Dylan Perera, Erin Windibank, Sue Simone, Windsor Viney). The term paruman signifies “getting together” in Balinese.
