The pinchoff saturation paradigm is contingent on the depletion zone having zero conductivity. In reality, depleted silicon has some moderate level of conductivity. This leads to a behavior where the depletion zone widens with more drain potential. This leads to a squeeze of both velocity and charge profiles. This causes saturation current to increase with applied drain potential, known as channel length modulation.
