A cognitive linguistic approach to learning English (for Teachers and advanced/proficiency level students) You've been taught wrong! Prepositions do have shared meanings when used in different contexts - location, time, emotion, reason, etc.
A basic introduction to a cognitive linguistic approach to learning English prepositions showing that preposition use is much more logical than commonly presented.
The video shows how the preposition ON has a shared meaning in diverse sentences such as:
• The book is on the table.
• The prisoners lived on bread and water.
• She bought the elephant on impulse.
The video has 5 parts:
Part 1 Introduction to the theory
• students using cognitive linguistic approach perform better than students using traditional learning methods 00:23
• example sentences of preposition ON which seem to have no common meaning 01:38
Part 2 What do prepositions actually do? 02:15
• a look at their semantic function and the 2 different ways we will look at prepositions.
Part 3 What happens when we use prepositions in non-spatial contexts? 04:50
• e.g. time or emotional state?
Part 4 Looking at the spatial information of a preposition in more detail 09:06
• what is the phrase "I'm at the supermarket" actually telling us? clue - it's not really about location!
• prepositions give us 3 different types of information 13:23
• using Image Schema to organize and present the different types of information 13:59
Part 5 Conclusion 16:25
• looking again at the example sentences with the preposition ON from the introduction in terms of what we have learned so far and seeing the shared meaning across each use of the preposition ON.
