What are Eye Floaters? - Causes, Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention
Eye floaters are dots or specks in a person’s vision that seem to float away when the person tries to look directly at them. They may look to you like black or gray specks, strings, or cobwebs.
The majority of people have floaters, which come and go and frequently don't require treatment. Floaters can, however, sometimes indicate a more serious eye problem.
What Causes Eye Floaters?
• Natural aging process - the protein fibers that make up the vitreous shrink down to tiny fragments and clump together.
• Eye infections.
• Eye injuries.
• Bleeding in the eye.
• Uveitis, which is an inflammation in the eye.
• Vitreous detachment, that happens when the vitreous pulls away from the retina.
• Retinal tear, that occurs when vitreous detachment tears a hole in the retina.
• Retinal detachment, that results from the retina getting pulled away from the back of the eye.
• And eye tumors.
What are the Symptoms of Eye Floaters?
• Shadowy dots or specks that follow your eye movements.
• Spots that stand out the most against a plain, bright background like a white wall or a blue sky.
• The shapes of this specks could be; small lines, rings, cobweb, and other irregular shapes.
How are Eye Floaters Treated?
• Treating underlaying cause.
• No treatment in most cases like in aging.
• Vitrectomy.
• Laser treatment.
How can Eye Floaters be Prevented?
• Wear protective eyewear.
• Quit smoking.
• Seek appropriate treatment in case of eye infections.
• Eat a varied nutritious diet.
• Rest the eyes frequently and avoiding straining the eyes.
