Ancelotti’s Christmas Tree
The Formation
Carlo Ancelotti’s christmas tree formation that he used during his time at AC Milan is one of the most interesting and iconic formations we’ve seen.
The formation begins with four at the back, organised in the same way as with any other four at the back formation. The midfield unit is in two lines, the deeper line of essentially 3 central midfielders and an advanced line of two attacking midfielders. With a single striker topping of the formation.
Moving the Ball Forward
As one of the most iconic Registas, Pirlo was responsible for linking the defensive unit and attacking unit. Through either short passes into the two attacking midfielders, often Kaka who would drift centrally into the traditional number 10 role. Or longer diagonal passes into the advancing full-backs.
This didn’t limit the two other midfielders who would regularly be used to play shorter passes and quick combinations to bypass opposition lines.
Lack of Width
As with any formation that puts an emphasis on central dominance the lack of width within the christmas tree formation was clear. This placed a large demand on both full-backs to provide width for the team. Requiring athletic and intelligent full-backs capable of being effective both in and out of possession.
