Warehouse Explosion Censorship
Some media outlets say they’re having trouble reporting from the Chinese port city of Tianjin, where there have been several explosions at a warehouse for hazardous material. Media say security officials and government censors have been trying to limit their coverage. AP reports that some users of a microblogging site called Sina Weibo have had posts about the explosions censored. At least 44 people have been killed and more than 500 were injured in the blasts.
Court Overturns Noodle Ban
An Indian court has overturned a government ban on Nestle India’s bestselling Maggi noodle brand. The Mumbai High Court says that because Nestle has agreed to stop producing the product until food authorities approve it, the ban is ‘arbitrary.’ In June, food safety regulators banned Maggi noodles because they contained unsafe levels of lead. On Wednesday, the Indian government sued Nestle India for nearly 100 million dollars for what it called ‘unfair trade practices.’
1st US Air Strikes from Incirlik Air Base
The United States announced it has launched its first manned air strikes against ISIS targets from the Incirlik Air Base in Turkey. But Turkish officials say that Turkish fighter jets were NOT involved. Since the US and Turkey launched what Ankara calls a ‘comprehensive battle’ against ISIS, the Turkish government has come under some criticism at home for joining the war in Syria.
Families of Fallen Soldiers to Sue Chilcot
Some of the families of British soldiers who were killed in the 2003 Iraq war are threatening to sue John Chilcot. Chilcot headed a panel that led a six-year inquiry into the war. A lawyer representing 29 families says Chilcot acted unlawfully by refusing to set a date for the publication of his report. His inquiry ended in 2011. Chilcot says he has delayed publication to allow those he criticised to respond to it. His panel took evidence from from hundreds of witnesses, including former Prime Minister Tony Blair, and is said to have cost taxpayers 15.6 million dollars.
