STORYLINE
German police said on Friday that their policy of "de-escalation" worked against demonstrators gathered for anti-Group of Eight protesters in Rostock and Heilingendamm.
At a news conference in Rostock, Leader of Police Operation Knut Abramowoski said "A police operation is successful when the goals are reached, and the goal was to keep safe our guests in the delegation and to make sure the summit can be done without any disturbance. Both goals were fulfilled and everyone who had to reach Heilingendamm finally reached there, and that is why this operation was successful."
Protesters claimed victory over police guarding the Group of Eight summit after three days of blocking roads, defiantly demonstrating at the security fence protecting the world leaders - and even leading police on a spectacular high-seas boat chase.
But police say their policy of "de-escalation" worked - allowing the protests to proceed so long as they remained peaceful, even in the banned zone around the fence - but cracking down hard when things started to get out of control.
They managed to prevent a repeat of the bloody riots in Rostock last weekend.
Though many protesters made it to the fence, none were known to have made it through. Greenpeace breached the secure zone at sea on Thursday with 11 boats in a spectacular protest before being intercepted
Anti G-8 protesters gathered near Rostock on Friday afternoon as the summit drew to a close with the majority demonstrating in a peaceful manner.
AP Television filmed what appeared to be a calm situation with approximately five thousand people gathering to listen to music and speakers.
Approximately 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Rostock in Heiligendamm a group of semi-naked protesters gathered on the beach to express their opposition to the summit.
Police were seen forcing a demonstrator arms behind his back as he was led away from the beach.
Police reported only eight officers with minor injuries over the whole period of the three-day summit.
However by Thursday evening, some five hundred people had been taken into custody, though it was not immediately clear how many would be charged.
