Chemoport is a medical device that is implanted primarily for chemotherapy. The device has two parts. A chamber which stays under the skin of your chest and a catheter, connected to the chamber that travels under the skin and enters one of the major veins in the neck or upper chest. The entire device is under the skin and no part is outside.
Chemoport is inserted in sterile condition, inside an operating room. The procedure can be done either under general anesthesia or local anesthesia depending on several patient and disease related factors.
Chemoport insertion is a day care procedure and usually no overnight admissions are required.
Once the incisions at the insertion sites have healed well, the Chemoport does not hinder the physical activities in any way. Besides avoiding direct pressure or trauma to the site, one does not have to take any special precautions as far as physical activities are concerned.
