If the name of this subregion seems low-key, that’s pretty apt. But it’s part of the greater Great Southern subregion, which sounds decidedly epic - and in some way that’s fitting: covering 1.7 million hectares and with soils dating back a cool 2.6 billion years, it lays claim to being the most ancient, isolated and largest wine region in the world.
Across Great Southern, reds dominate - Syrah/Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon together make up about half of the production, and the former is particularly wonderful. But the almost cult status of the evocatively named Isolation Ridge Riesling by Frankland Estate tells you a lot about how this long, dry, gradual growing season can yield beguiling wines with superbly refreshing acidity.
