Survivors and descendants of those french Jews who were
deported to Germany during the Nazi occupation (from June 1940 -
August 1944) attended a special memorial service on Sunday (30/4)
in Paris. Health Minister Simone Veil, who was deported as a young girl to Auschwitz, remembered her parents who died at the camp. Paris Mayor and conservative Presidential candidate Jacques Chirac placed a wreath at the tomb of the "Unknown Jewish Martyr". French and American veterans who liberated the camp also attended the service.
