A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 hit a mountainous region in northeast Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan on Tuesday evening, causing damage to buildings, triggering landslides and leaving at least 12 people dead and over 200 injured. Tremors were felt as far away as India. Emergency workers reported that the damage was less severe than feared, but relief and rescue work is likely to be hampered by the rugged terrain and remote location of the affected areas. Phone lines have been disrupted and a highway in the worst-hit Swat area of Pakistan has been blocked by landslides.
