‘Playing on the silvery strings of the rivers, an invisible musician has with his delicate touch composed the song of its heart – the Bhatiyali. Several areas remain submerged in rainwater for almost six months in a year, with the boat the only mode of transport... separated from their families for months on end, they have for their companion only the river on which they row their boats, with the waters merging into the horizons, and the azure heavens above.'
Jasimuddin
Murshidi Gaan, 1977.

Shah Abdul Karim (1916-2009) was a preeminent singer and songwriter of Bhatiali, Jari, Sari and Pala genres. He lived in the Ujan Dhol village by the Kalni river in the fertile lowlands of Sunamganj district. A life of continued hardship and lack of access to institutional education could not deter Karim’s outpourings of his spiritual quest, from being inscribed in over 1500 songs. He received his spiritual and musical training from Shah Ibrahim Mastan Baksh. His compositions are shining examples of the rich heritage of devotional poetry that thrives in Bengal. Shah Abdul Karim’s compositions have inspired generations of musicians in Bangladesh and continue to resonate in the hearts and minds of the people.
Chandana Majumdar’s hugely successful career as a folk singer and more recently as a playback artist, has ostensibly pushed her to the ranks of one of the most-loved artists in the country. Her full-throated style, emblazoned with the philosophical depth of the songs of the hinterlands, creates an infectious energy on stage.
To encourage and cherish the practice of the arts, Bengal Foundation organised the Bangla Sangskriti Utsab, a 10-day cultural festival in Sylhet from February 22 to March 3, 2017. Over 400 poets-writers-singers-musicians-dancers-stage actors-craftspersons-painters performed and engaged in various kinds of programming at the festival, over the ten days.
This rendition of Shah Abdul Karim’s song ‘Tumi bine akul poran/ My heart longs for you in your absence’, by Chandana Majumdar, was performed on stage at the Bangla Sangskriti Utsab, in Sylhet, in 2017. The artist is accompanied on stage by musician Moniruzzaman on the flute; Dasharath Das on the Dhol; Ratan Kumar Das on the Dotara; Ekram Hossain on the Kartaal; Asit Biswas on the Esraj; Iftekhar Alam Prodhan on the Tabla; and Binod Roy on the keyboard.
