The Socialist candidate in the French presidential elections,
Lionel Jospin, confounded all predictions to come top of the poll
in Sunday's (23/3) first round of voting. The unexpected result
was a blow for Gaullist Jacques Chirac, who had expected to win.
Prime Minister Edouard Balladur came in third and pulled out of
the race.
