Sam Oyer, M.D., grew up in Indiana where he attended undergraduate and medical school. Following this, he moved to Charleston where he completed his residency training in otolaryngology (ENT) at MUSC. During this time he was drawn to the field of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and pursued additional fellowship training in this field at Johns Hopkins Hospital with mentors who are among the nation's leaders in this specialty. This training focused exclusively on cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face and neck. He has a particular interest in facial reanimation of patients suffering from facial paralysis and has performed clinical research in this area exploring outcomes of nerve grafting and smile restoration surgery.
Following his fellowship, Dr. Oyer was delighted to return to MUSC to join the faculty in the Otolaryngology Department. He is board-certified in both Otolaryngology and Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and received the Jack Anderson Award for the highest score in the nation on the American Board of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery examination.
