"What's been happening with the air travel in Europe is that it's come back and that in a way is a very good thing. After the pandemic, people want to travel again and airlines are seeing a huge surge in demand. However, this surge in demand has created some problems. Airlines have gone through a very difficult time over the past two years, have had to furlough people, lay off people. And with demand coming back now very quick and perhaps quicker than we all expected, they find themselves short of staff."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Henk Ombelet, Head of Finance at Cirium:
"They've (airlines and airports) been asking government to speed up security checks or or maybe find other ways of doing that. They've started training staff before they've been security cleared. So that all helps. I think it was One Air who said that previously they would have gotten staff over from the EU into the UK. That is no longer possible because of Brexit or more difficult because of Brexit. So that's no longer an option."

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Henk Ombelet, Head of Finance at Cirium:
"So increasing pay might help. The problem is, of course, that airlines and airports alike have found themselves in two years of losses and don't have that much financial muscle at the moment, either to simply increase, increase pay across the board. So that is a real issue the industry needs to make it more attractive for people to work at airports so they can actually go back to delivering the service that they're meant to be delivering to passengers."
