An important part of any outdoor system is a bug net. And trust me, you’re going to need one of these. Whether with a camp cot or just going to ground with a pad and a sleeping bag. In any case it is a quick and easy setup, that is ultra lightweight that brings comfort and peace of mind when I’m trying to get those zzz’s.
By far the easiest, lightest, and most inexpensive bug net is the one I just finished. Made with noseeum netting. I purchased 2 1/3 yards for $7. I did rolled hems on the short sides and then added reinforcement at the centers where it sits on the ridge line. I also sewed two pieces of Velcro at this peak that snugs around the hammocks suspension.
On the long edges I just left the original selvage and folded it over a matching length of paracord while I sewed the channel. Because this is a minimal unattached bug net I needed the weight of the paracord to hold the net against the hammock. After placing the net over the ridge line, you just close the Velcro ends and then cinch up those bottom cords with slip knots. This pulls up the net to conform to the hammock but still allows easy access. I also added a mitten hook to attach the net to the shoulder tie out to keep it all in place. So, I get full coverage and it easily pulls back without having to remove a sleeping pad or an under quilt.
For a bug net with more coverage I used two drapery sheers that I purchased for $10. I sewed them together and then ran shock cord through the bottom channel. The suspension feeds through the sleeves on each end.
Both of these options are light weight and they won’t break the bank. So, challenge yourself, work on those sewing skills, and then… get out there!
