The four main blood types in the ABO system are A, B, AB, and O.
Individuals with type A blood have A antigens on the surface of their red blood cells and antibodies against B antigens in their plasma. Type B blood has B antigens on the surface of red blood cells and antibodies against A antigens in plasma. Type AB blood has both A and B antigens on the surface of red blood cells and no antibodies against either A or B antigens in plasma. Type O blood has no A or B antigens on the surface of red blood cells and antibodies against both A and B antigens in plasma.
The ABO blood group system is important in transfusion medicine, as transfusion of incompatible blood can cause severe reactions. For example, transfusing type A blood into a person with type B blood can cause a potentially fatal immune reaction. Therefore, it is important to match the blood type of the recipient with that of the donor.
