Pick up used - Monty's Full Monty Neck Humbucker
Same amp settings, strings, pickup height etc., the only changes are pick attack and the parts played. In retrospect, I should have played the exact same parts with the same velocity to make it a better comparison.
The reason - I've gone to trying an Alnico 3 magnet in this pickup as with my rig it was lacking mids in comparison to the bridge, I wanted them to be closer in tone. I don't use channel switching amps, just turn down to get a clean sound, I would like to be able to just switch to the neck to get this.
The result - The Alnico 3 has more mids overall, there is a slight mid scoop too in the higher mids compared to the 5. Mid scoop on the Alnico 5 seems to in the lower mids. It seemed like the Alnico 3 had a higher output although this could have been the difference in playing. Also more mids would make the amp distort more naturally compared to highs/lows. Alnico 3 had slightly less bottom end and top end.
Alnico 5 was the stock roughcast magnet that came with the pickup. Alnico 3 was a polished magnet from alegreeguitarsupplies on eBay for £4 posted. Very cheap mod and easy to do, look it up on YouTube to find instructional videos. Note: The humbucker is reversed, meaning the pole pieces are closer to the bridge, this changes the tone slightly to be more slightly more like the bridge.
