KABC-TV currently broadcasts 51 hours and 25 minutes of locally produced newscasts weekly, with 7 hours and 35 minutes each weekday and seven hours on weekends. The station produces an hour-long newscast at 4 p.m. on weekend afternoons. KABC-TV once operated a news bureau in Sacramento, sharing resources with sister stations KGO-TV in San Francisco and KFSN-TV in Fresno, but this bureau closed in 2014. The station still maintains bureaus in Riverside and Orange.
KABC-TV's first locally produced newscast, "Lew Irwin Reports," debuted in 1957. Initially a 15-minute program, it aired Monday through Saturday at 11:00 p.m.. It featured a news summary and a seven-minute feature by Irwin, who interviewed notable figures such as Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Bertrand Russell.
In February 1969, KABC-TV adopted the Eyewitness News format, popularized by its New York City sister station WABC-TV. The station's newscasts initially used the "Tar Sequence" cue from the 1967 film Cool Hand Luke as their theme music. The station's first anchor team under the Eyewitness News banner included Bill Bonds and Stu Nahan.
KABC-TV has a long history of connecting with local viewers, including initiatives like broadcasting a newscast from a viewer's home in 1972. The station's newscasts often included debates and commentaries featuring various political viewpoints.
During the 1980s, KABC-TV ran a three-hour block of local newscasts on weekdays from 4 to 7 p.m., the first station in the region to introduce an hour-long newscast at 4 p.m. The station has since made various adjustments to its news schedule, including adding a 3 p.m. newscast in 2016 and expanding its weekday morning newscast to three hours in 2018.
On January 13, 2014, KABC-TV began producing an hour-long evening newscast for KDOC-TV, an Anaheim-based independent station. The newscast airs seven nights a week, with a midnight rebroadcast of KABC's 11 p.m. newscast.
On September 30, 2015, the KABC-TV studios in Glendale were evacuated due to a bomb threat, forcing the station off the air temporarily. The threat was resolved, and the newscast resumed later that day.
In February 2017, KABC-TV upgraded its news helicopter, AIR7HD, with XTREME Vision and SkyMap7. XTREME Vision features an advanced zoom lens capable of tracking vehicle speeds in real time, while SkyMap7 uses augmented reality to overlay street names on the camera feed, enhancing nighttime navigation. Both features are powered by the SHOTOVER F1 Live system.
