One important thing to keep in mind, there are a lot of agents who are great at working with both buyers and sellers. I also work with buyers and sellers and I enjoy working with both, but there are agents who exclusively work with buyers only and there are agents who exclusively work with sellers only. Obviously if you are looking to buy, you’re not going to interview an agent who exclusively works with sellers. Same, as if you are a seller, you probably don’t want to have an agent who works exclusively with buyers and doesn’t have what it takes to sell your home. But it’s perfectly fine if agents work with both, as long as you’re able to properly interview them and make sure they are the right people to work with.
One of the biggest mistakes that mostly buyers are making is when they start their buying journey with the first agent they meet, without even knowing that agent’s qualifications. This can happen, if let’s you met an agent at a random open house, or at a friend’s birthday party or you put your information in a real estate search website and someone responded to your inquiry. There is nothing wrong with finding an agent that way, and they might be great person to work with, but commit to that agent only after you’ve done your initial interview with them to make sure they have what it takes to get the job done.
Sellers are usually more careful who they work with but still, as a seller, if you don’t know what exactly to look for in your agent, you might end up working with the wrong real estate agent.
