Common: An Icon in Hip-Hop
Lonnie Rashid Lynn, known professionally as Common (formerly known as Common Sense), is an American rapper and actor from Chicago, Illinois. He is the recipient of three Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. At 20, he first signed with the independent label Relativity Records to release his debut studio album Can I Borrow a Dollar? (1992), which was met with critical acclaim along with its follow-ups, Resurrection (1994) and One Day It'll All Make Sense (1997). He maintained an underground following into the late 1990s and achieved mainstream success through his work with the Black music collective, Soulquarians.
Pete Rock: A Legend in Production
Peter O. Phillips, better known by his stage name Pete Rock, is an American music producer, DJ, and rapper. He is widely recognized as one of the greatest hip-hop producers of all time and is often mentioned alongside DJ Premier, RZA, and Q-Tip as one of the mainstays of 1990s East Coast hip-hop production. He rose to prominence in the early 1990s as one half of the critically acclaimed group Pete Rock & CL Smooth. Early in his career, he was also famed for his remix work. After the duo went their separate ways, Rock continued with a solo career that has garnered him worldwide respect, though little in the way of mainstream success. Along with groups such as Stetsasonic, Gang Starr, A Tribe Called Quest, and The Roots, Rock played a major role in merging elements from jazz into hip-hop music (also known as jazz rap).
The Collaboration: The Auditorium Vol. 1
The two hip-hop icons are teaming up for a project steeped in nostalgia. On Monday (June 11), Common announced on social media the release date of his new collaborative album with fellow hip-hop legend Pete Rock. Titled The Auditorium Vol. 1, the album is poised to evoke nostalgia, paying homage to the culture’s most defining era—the boom bap of the 1990s. It is set for release on July 12.
