In August 5, 2023, a house was swept into the Mendenhall River in Juneau, Alaska's capital, following unprecedented glacial flooding. The event led city officials to issue evacuation orders for residents along one street. Glacial flooding occurs when accumulated water finds its way through melting ice, which in this case originated from a breach at Suicide Basin, a side basin of the Mendenhall Glacier situated approximately 12 miles north of Juneau. This type of event, known as a glacial lake outburst flood, happens when a natural dam containing glacial water ruptures. According to reports from the National Weather Service, the flooding wreaked havoc along the Mendenhall River, resulting in the destruction of several structures.
