Far-right Freedom Party leader Heinz-Christian Strache is determined Austria's political mainstream will not be allowed to ignore his party's gains in Sunday's general election.
Riding a wave of hostility towards the euro and growing anti-immigration sentiment in several European countries, Strache wants to form alliances with other right-wing movements.
"We have a very friendly relationship with Italy's Northern League and we also have cooperation with the Vlaams Belang in Belgium, and recently I have had talks with Geert Wilders in the Netherlands. There have been and will be many discussions. before the next European Parliament elections. The freedom-conscious forces will combine their energies and will try to develop a stronger cooperative alliance in order to have a more heavyweight presence across Europe," said Strache.
Strache has used a more moderate tone of stressing the "pro-Austrian" rather than the
"anti-foreigner" theme and rejected neo-Nazi ties, but so far they have done little to make him more acceptable to centrist parties.
