My daughter was home last weekend from college, she likes running the tractor, all summer long I've wanted to blade our driveway. So, we spent a fall day learning about how a box blade can be used to freshen up a gravel driveway.
Reagan has never run a box blade, the first time you do it, it's easy to get discouraged. You're trying to invigorate a gravel driveway that can be really compacted by cars and equipment driving over it. The first couple of passes can be disappointing. I checked, and the last time I had worked up this driveway was way back in 2015. It needed attention.
For this project, we had our box blade angled slightly higher in the front than in the back by extending the top link. I find that the box blade does more aggressive digging when you back up versus going forward, (I guess that's why the blade is on the front of the bulldozer, pushing) and by having the cutting edge pointing down slightly in the back we were able to run the tractor in reverse and work the old gravel to the surface.
If you attempt this project, don't give up. It can take some time to get the gravel worked up. We had the blade level from side-to-side in the first passes. Toward the end, I made it a bit higher on one side so we could create a slight crown, so the water drained off of it. You can use the ripper teeth for really aggressive digging. We didn't, because I worry about roots and big rocks just under the surface. Run in low gear, or low hydro range, with the engine revved up to about 2000 RPM and just drive. That's all there is to it. You may have to make multiple passes before you get it like you want it, but a box blade is the perfect tool for this job.
Once we had it worked up, running forward with the cutting edge slightly higher in the front meant we were able to easily spread the material, again giving us a nice driveway, without the weeds in the middle. In the end, we had the old driveway back again and if Reagan ever moves to the country and has to do this project, she'll be ready.
