On Monday 14 November 2016, Diabetes SA held a seminar for people with type 1 diabetes at the Adelaide Convention Centre which focused on the latest research and innovations into diabetes management.
Light refreshments were served from 6.00pm and there was an opportunity for all attendees to visit trade displays and see the latest insulin pumps, smart meters, hypo treatment, continuous blood glucose monitors and more. On hand to answer any questions and showcase new technology and information were representatives from JDRF, BD, Nipro, Medtronic, Abbott, Roche, ENDIA Study and AMSL.
General Manager Fiona Benton opened the seminar and introduced the first speaker, Professor Toby Coates who presented the latest research information into the cure for type 1 diabetes. Professor Coates discussed islet cell transplantation and ways of protecting these cells once transplanted from destruction by the body's own immune system.
Professor Nikolai Petrovsky then presented information on the latest research into nutrition therapy, including inulin fibre and research into ways of preventing type 1 diabetes. The role of the mother's diet during pregnancy and breastfeeding can play a key role in the child's future health, including the development of type 1 diabetes.
After a short 15 minute break, Professor Jennifer Couper presented her latest research on how environmental factors can impact the development of type 1 diabetes. Incidence of type 1 diabetes in early childhood is increasing in Australia, Professor Couper presented information on the ENDIA (Environmental Determinants of Islet Autoimmunity) Study where they are following 1400 families Australia-wide with type 1 diabetes from pregnancy until the infant is 3 years old.
The seminar concluded at 9.30pm with very positive feedback from the audience.
